But aside from making skincare products smell good, essential oils come in many other benefits for the skin, like healing skin infections. That’s why it’s great to make skincare products using them. If you are curious about how essential oils can be used in creating skincare products, then read on to know more.

The Benefits of Essential Oils to the Skin

Here are some of the reasons why essential oils are used in making most skincare products:

  • Can help treat acne: Based on a clinical trial, tea tree essential oil helped reduce inflammation that is caused by acne. It also had fewer side effects on the skin compared to benzoyl peroxide, which is the most common medicine for treating acne. Aside from tea tree oil, even Plai oil also showed antimicrobial activity counter to a wide range of bacteria, including P. acnes.
  • Essential oils are antifungal: Based on a study published in Microbios, essential oils like orange, geranium, lemongrass, Aegle marmelos, palmarosa, and patchouli can fight against 12 strains of fungi and can also inhibit their growth.
  • They are rich in antioxidants: Essential oils, when applied to the skin topically, can protect you from the damaging effects of the harmful free radicals. Based on a study, essential oils like thyme, basil, and oregano can keep the skin healthy by destroying the free radicals.
  • Can reduce inflammation: One of the essential oils that are rich in antioxidants is rosemary, and it can also reduce skin inflammation and boost circulation, as well. This is dues to the natural oxidative defenses of the essential oil.
  • They have anti-aging benefits: There are also essential oils that can help reduce the signs of aging, like the lemon essential oil. It can also protect the skin from sun damage, and as well as reduce oxidative stress on the skin’s surface.

Tea Tree Oil to Fight Acne

If you want to use essential oils to control acne, then tea tree oil is the best choice. It has antimicrobial activity against P. acnes, which is the acne-causing bacteria. It can help your skin become clear and as well as prevent further breakouts. You can mix 5 to 6 drops of tea tree oil with a tablespoon of honey. Then apply the mixture to your face. Leave it on for up to 20 minutes, then wash off. You can do this once every day.

Rosehip Oil to Decrease Wrinkles

If you are bothered by the increasing wrinkles on your face, then rosehip oil can help you. It contains antioxidants and essential fatty acids that can help in cell regeneration, making your wrinkles disappear. You can mix a teaspoon of rosehip oil with 3 teaspoons of aloe vera gel, 5 drops of lavender, and 5 drops of lemon oil. Before sleeping, massage the mixture around your eyes and leave it on. You can wash it off in the morning. You can do this every day.

Geranium Oil to Reduce Oiliness

If you have oily skin, then geranium oil is the perfect essential oil that you can turn into a skincare product. It is non-irritant, non-toxic, and non-sensitizing, making it suitable for all types of skin. Aside from that, it can also help in treating different skin issues, including clogged and congested skin, dermatitis, and eczema. All you need is to mix 3 drops of geranium oil to a tablespoon of coconut oil. Then apply it to your face and leave it on overnight for best results. You can do this every alternate day.

Lemon Oil for Anti-Aging Skincare

Based on a 1999 study, a lemon essential oil can reduce the effects of oxidative and nitrosative stress on the skin. When it’s applied to the skin topically, it can inhibit the reactions of free radicals that can cause signs of aging. You just need to mix 20 drops of lemon with ½ cup of safflower oil. Before you sleep, massage the mixture to your face and neck, and other body parts that you want. Then wash it off the next day. You can do this once every day.

Frankincense Oil for Achieving an Even Skin Tone

If you have surgery scars, stretch marks, and other marks left by wounds or acne that make your skin look dull, then making a skincare product out of frankincense oil might help you. Based on studies, this essential oil has a steroid-like pentacyclic triterpene structure that can soothe irritated skin and help you get an even skin tone at the same time. You just need to mix 4 drops of frankincense oil to a tablespoon of unrefined coconut oil. You can apply it to your face after cleansing twice every day.

Lavender Oil to Brighten Skin

Lavender oil also has anti-inflammatory properties. It means that it can reduce skin irritation, redness, and as well as skin discoloration, restoring the natural skin tone, and making it even brighter. To make this, mix 2 to 3 drops of lavender oil with 5 tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Apply it on your face or on the affected areas, then wash it off after 20 minutes. You can do this once every day.

Clary Sage Oil to Heal Wounds

Clary sage is an antibacterial essential oil that is very effective against Staphylococcus aureus, which is the bacteria that causes boils, pimples, and carbuncles. When you apply it on the affected area, it can eliminate the bacteria, helping the wounds to heal faster. To use it as a skincare product, you need to mix clary sage oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba, argan, almond, coconut, or olive oils, as per ratio. Then, apply it on your face and leave it on overnight and wash it off the next day. You can do this daily until the condition heals.

Use Essential Oils to Make a Lotion:

Aside from facial cleansers and serums, you can also make a lotion using essential oils. You’ll just need to combine your liquid oil with coconut or beeswax oil. Then add some shea butter or coconut butter to improve the consistency of the mixture. Put them in a glass blow and place over a pan of warm water and blend them as they melt. When the oils become liquid enough, add some active ingredients like Vitamin E. You can also include a few drops of other good essential oils like lavender, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, and chamomile.

These are some of the different ways on how you can create skincare products with essential oils. When it comes to creating skincare products out of essential oils, you can start with simple ones like creams and lotions. Then, you can play with a few different types of essential oil until you find the best one that will match your skin and your preferences. It is also great if you can create skincare products using essential oils that you can give to your friends and loved ones.
